About
Also known as: Marlanna Evans
Rapsody has quietly built one of the most respected catalogs in hip hop, known for intricate rhyme patterns, sharp metaphors, and a lyrical density that puts her in conversations with the genre's all time greats. The Wilson, North Carolina rapper born Marlanna Evans got her footing with producer 9th Wonder before breaking through on her own terms, most visibly when Kendrick Lamar tapped her for "Complexion (A Zulu Love)" on To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015. Her second album, Laila's Wisdom, earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, and her fourth album Please Don't Cry delivered a genuine award moment when "3:AM" featuring Erykah Badu won the Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance. She has also collaborated with Madlib on the joint EP MadRaps, and her fifth studio album God Gotta Afro and Gold Hoops features appearances from George Clinton and Malice, keeping her catalog as adventurous as ever.
