Rats on Rafts are a post punk and new wave band from Rotterdam whose sound draws deep from the darker end of early 1980s guitar music. Their album Deep Below is a brooding, atmospheric record that critics in the Netherlands and abroad received warmly, noting echoes of The Cocteau Twins, The Sound, The Cure and Clan of Xymox. That kind of company tells you everything about where the band is coming from: dense, shadowy textures and a mood that feels permanently overcast. What makes them interesting is that they pursue this aesthetic entirely on their own terms, with little apparent interest in whatever trends are moving around them.
