About
Also known as: M. Ravel, Marice Ravel, Ravel, モーリス・ラヴェル, ラヴェル
Maurice Ravel wrote music that sounds effortless and is anything but. Early in the twentieth century Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes invited him to write a ballet, and the result was Daphnis et Chloé, an hour long pastoral about two foundlings in love. Its two orchestral suites are well known, while the complete score is performed far less often. He was also a composer who looked backwards as well as forwards. Pieces like Tombeau de Couperin and Menuet Antique nod to the old Baroque masters, and the Sonatine and Ma Mère l'Oye have been reworked by chamber ensembles for flute, harp and strings. His work belongs to the French repertoire of roughly 1900 to 1940, a period of upheaval in society and in music, with leftover Romanticism, early jazz influences and a fascination for music from outside Europe all in the mix.
