About
Rebecca Roozeman is a violinist with Finnish roots who made a big splash at the Dutch Violin Competition, where she took both the Oskar Back Prize and the Audience Prize. The jury called her a born soloist, praising her command of the instrument, her willingness to take artistic risks and the total assurance of her playing. Her Finnish heritage shows up in her programming. She likes to play Jean Sibelius and his contemporary Johan Halvorsen, and she's keen to show a different side of Sibelius than the stern symphonies and Finlandia most people know. His short pieces for violin and piano are colourful romantic miniatures full of folk references. She often sets them next to the French sonatas of Debussy and Ravel, which share that rich palette, and she has done this alongside the Irish pianist Seán Morgan Rooney.
