About
Rebelution have spent two decades proving that reggae rock from a California college town can hit genuinely hard. Formed in Isla Vista in 2004 by a group of UC Santa Barbara students, they built their reputation the slow way, playing local shows and self releasing music before their 2007 debut Courage to Grow landed them on heavy rotation at KROQ and earned them iTunes Best Reggae Album of the year. Every album since has charted at number one on Billboard's Top Reggae Albums, and their 2012 record Peace of Mind cracked the Billboard 200 at number 13 while they were giving half the album away for free. Their sound sits firmly in roots reggae territory, warm and rhythmically tight, with socially conscious lyrics running throughout. The band runs their own label, 87 Music, named after their old college address, and has collaborated with the likes of Don Carlos, Collie Buddz, and Jamaican producers Don Corleon and Winta James. Their seventh studio album In The Moment brought in guests including Kabaka Pyramid, Busy Signal, and soul singer Durand Jones, showing they are still reaching outward rather than coasting on a formula.
