Alan Wilder started Recoil as a side outlet while still playing keyboards for Depeche Mode, making experimental recordings on a 4 track cassette Portastudio that had almost nothing in common with the polished synth pop he was known for. The project took on a John Cage esque quality from the start, leaning into synthesized landscapes and sampling rather than anything remotely catchy. When Wilder left Depeche Mode in 1995, Recoil became his full focus. Over the years the project has drawn in some striking collaborators, including Douglas McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb and Diamanda Galas. The 2007 album subHuman earned IGN's Best Electronic Album of the year. A few years later, Wilder took Recoil on its first ever live shows as part of the Selected Events 2010 tour, which stretched across Europe, North America and South America. The most recent studio output from Recoil is the 2012 track Inheritance.
