Recondite, the alias of Lorenz Brunner, makes a kind of techno that resists easy categorization. Music writers have reached for phrases like "meditative techno", "moll techno", and even "Götterdämmerung in 808" trying to pin it down, which tells you a lot. His releases blend melancholy, low tempo atmospherics with proper dancefloor ready tracks, and he shapes that sound almost entirely through a single synthesizer, Ableton's Operator, combined with field recordings. Brunner runs his own Berlin based label Plangent Records and has put out music on heavyweights like Ghostly International, Innervisions, Dystopian, and Hotflush. His 2013 album Hinterland turned him into a globally booked live act, and he has since played everywhere from intimate clubs to festival stages alongside the likes of Sven Väth and Richie Hawtin. He also served as a resident DJ for Hawtin's ENTER.Ibiza in 2014. With releases continuing well into the 2020s, including Taum, The Dystopian Episodes, and Indifferent, he keeps his catalogue growing at a steady pace.
