Red Sparowes built their reputation on sprawling, mostly instrumental post rock and post metal, with one twist that sets them apart from the crowd: a prominent pedal steel guitar, an instrument almost nobody else in these genres bothers with. Formed in Los Angeles in 2003 as a side project, the group drew members from heavy and experimental acts like Isis, Neurosis, Angel Hair, and later Marriages. Their debut, At the Soundless Dawn, arrived in 2005 and drew comparisons to Pelican, Sonic Youth, and The Cure, which tells you something about the range they were working with. Three full length albums followed over the next five years, with Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun in 2006 and The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer in 2010, alongside splits, an EP called Aphorisms, and tours with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, among others. After going quiet around 2011, the band resurfaced in 2019 with a lineup that includes guitarist Emma Ruth Rundle, and confirmed they were working on new material.
