About
Also known as: Real Big Fish
Reel Big Fish rode the third wave ska boom of the mid 1990s harder than almost anyone, and their gold certified album Turn the Radio Off put them on MTV and kept them on the Billboard charts for 32 weeks on the back of the irresistibly self aware single "Sell Out". When the ska revival fizzled, most bands disappeared, but Reel Big Fish just kept going, building a devoted cult following instead of chasing mainstream approval. Frontman Aaron Barrett is the one constant through decades of lineup shuffles, keeping the Huntington Beach band's signature loud, brassy, self deprecating sound intact across a string of independent releases. After being dropped by Jive Records in 2006, they started their own label and never really looked back. Albums like We're Not Happy Til You're Not Happy leaned into Barrett's sharp, jaded wit, while 2009's Fame, Fortune and Fornication showed a lighter side with a full record of cover songs. More recently they put out official videos for tracks like "Ska Show" and "You Can't Have All of Me", proving they're still very much in business.
