Reinier Baas is a jazz guitarist from Hilversum who has built a reputation for drawing freely from jazz, hip hop, bossa nova, indie rock and contemporary classical music, weaving them together into something coherent rather than chaotic. That open, genre spanning approach earned him the Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious Dutch award in jazz and improvised music. He has played as part of a trio with drummer Han Bennink and performed as a soloist within the Metropole Orkest, and he also works within the project of fellow musician Ben van Gelder. Together as a duo they released This Is Water, a record built on their own compositions while leaving room for improvisation. The project shows what Baas does best: bringing structure and spontaneity into the same space.
