About
Also known as: Divine Ikubor, Divine Joshua Ikubor
Nigerian singer and rapper Rema, born Divine Joshua Ikubor, broke through in 2019 with the infectious "Dumebi" after a viral Instagram freestyle caught the attention of D'Prince, landing him a deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Don Jazzy's Mavin Records. His sound, which he calls "afro rave", mixes Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences, setting him apart from the broader Afrobeats crowd. His 2022 single "Calm Down" went stratospheric, climbing to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 via a remix with Selena Gomez and sitting atop the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart for a record 58 weeks. His debut album Rave & Roses made the Billboard 200 and eventually became the first African album to cross two billion streams on Spotify. His follow up, Heis (2024), went darker and more drum driven, leaning into his Edo cultural roots and earning him his first Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album. More recently he dropped the singles "Baby (Is It a Crime)", which samples Sade, and "Bout U", keeping his momentum firmly rolling.
