About
Rembrandt Trio, the Canadian jazz group built around pianist Rembrandt Frerichs, bassist Matheus Nikolaewski and drummer Vinsent Planjer, keeps one foot firmly in jazz tradition while constantly testing what that tradition can hold. Their playing is defined by curiosity and an open, conversational approach to ensemble work. A pivotal moment in their career came at the International Piano Trio Festival in London, where they shared a memorable double bill with Chick Corea's Trio on the stage of Ronnie Scott's. That encounter with Corea, who passed away in 2021, left a clear mark on the group. To mark their twentieth anniversary, the trio wove fresh original compositions inspired by Corea's musical language together with selections from his catalogue, a programme that earned praise from Jazz Magazine following their North Sea Jazz Festival appearance.
