Renée Fleming made history in 2008 as the first woman to solo headline a season opening night at the Metropolitan Opera in its 125 year history, and she remains the only classical singer ever to perform the US National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Her full lyric soprano voice has taken her across Italian, German, French, Czech, and Russian repertoire, yet she has never been content to stay in one lane. She has collaborated with artists as varied as Luciano Pavarotti, Lou Reed, Wynton Marsalis, and Dead & Company, and she recorded songs for two Best Picture Oscar winners, The Shape of Water and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Composers including André Previn, Caroline Shaw, and Wayne Shorter have all written works specifically for her, and she has championed world premieres throughout her career. Beyond performing, Fleming has become a serious advocate for research into music and brain health, launching grant programs through Johns Hopkins and publishing an anthology on arts and wellness with Penguin Random House. Sir Georg Solti put it simply: in his long life, he had met maybe two sopranos with her quality of singing.
