Res, born Shareese Renée Ballard in Philadelphia, cracked the Billboard Dance chart at number one with 'They Say Vision' in 2002, which also pushed her debut album How I Do onto the Billboard 200. That debut mixed indie pop, soul, and rock in a way that felt genuinely hard to pin down, and it got a remix from Nas on the track 'Ice King'. After MCA Records folded and Geffen shelved her follow up work, she eventually released her second album Black.Girls.Rock! independently in 2009 through digital platforms, describing it as more of a singer songwriter record than her debut. She also teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the hip hop and electro duo Idle Warship, headlining a sold out European tour before dropping their debut album Habits of the Heart in 2011. Along the way she provided backing vocals on Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere tour and contributed a track to the Akeelah and the Bee soundtrack. Her discography also includes a tribute appearance on Red Hot and Riot, the Red Hot Organization's celebration of Fela Kuti.
