About
Also known as: René Juan Pérez Joglar, Residente Calle 13
Holding the record for the most Latin Grammy Awards ever won by a single artist, René Pérez Joglar, known as Residente, has carved out one of the most distinctive careers in Latin music. He first made his name as a founding member of Calle 13, the alternative rap group he built with his stepbrother Visitante, and the pair put out five critically celebrated albums together before he stepped out on his own in 2015. His 2017 solo debut is probably the most ambitious thing he has done: it was inspired by a DNA genealogy test and recorded across multiple countries, pulling in musical styles from all over the world. That same restless curiosity shows up in his documentary work too, including the travel doc Sin Mapa and the self titled film that accompanied the album. He is also a vocal advocate for indigenous rights and education across Latin America, and has fronted campaigns for both UNICEF and Amnesty International. His 2023 track Bajo y Batería shows he is still very much active.
