About

Richard Egarr is one of those rare musicians equally at home conducting a Baroque orchestra and sitting down at a harpsichord to play fifteenth century organ intabulations. A specialist in historically informed performance shaped by study with the legendary Gustav Leonhardt, he has recorded solo keyboard music and chamber repertoire for labels including Harmonia Mundi and Hyperion, spanning everything from early Renaissance pieces to Chopin on period pianos and even Berg on a modern instrument. He served as music director of the Academy of Ancient Music from 2006 to 2021, and then took the helm at the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco, a post he held through the 2023 to 2024 season before stepping into the role of music director laureate. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague. Based in Amsterdam, he has additionally led the Academy of the Begijnhof there.
