About
Rick Margitza is a Detroit born tenor saxophonist who carved out a serious reputation in New York before eventually making Paris his base. He landed a gig with Miles Davis in the late 1980s and released three albums on Blue Note between 1989 and 1991, Color, Hope and This Is New, all of which charted on the US jazz listings. His playing sits comfortably in the hard bop and post bop tradition, though he has ranged well beyond straight ahead jazz, recording alongside McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Maria Schneider and Tony Williams over the years. Since relocating to Paris in 2003, Margitza has become a fixture in the European jazz scene, collaborating with players like Martial Solal and Jean Michel Pilc. His ambitions stretch beyond the saxophone too: he has composed a saxophone concerto and two full symphonies for orchestra. His 2017 album Gypsy Tenor, a nod to his Hungarian Romani heritage on his father's side, and the 2021 release Sacred Hearts show he has kept busy well into his later career.
