About
Rio Romeo calls their sound "cabaret punk" or "theatrical blues," and those tags do a lot of work. The Los Angeles area singer songwriter, producer, and multi instrumentalist built a following through TikTok during the pandemic, then watched a demo of "Butch 4 Butch" go viral in 2021 and turn them into one of the more distinctive voices in indie pop's LGBTQ+ corner. The 2022 EP Good God! followed, featuring the fan favourite "Nothing's New." Their 2025 debut album Good Grief! digs into anger, recovery, and long term grief, including "JOHNNYSCOTT," a country flavoured murder ballad Romeo wrote as a cathartic response to a real experience with a groomer. Live, Romeo hauls a vintage piano tuned a half step below standard pitch to every show, because it matches the slightly warped tonal quality of the studio recordings. As Romeo puts it, "the struggle of bringing the piano everywhere is an art form in itself."
