About
Ripped to Shreds carved out a genuinely distinct corner of death metal by leaning hard into Chinese folklore, history, and wuxia as lyrical territory, something almost nobody else in the genre was doing. Andrew Lee started the project solo in San Jose in 2016, recording the debut album 埋葬 (Maizang) entirely in his parents' basement, and it landed to universal acclaim. The band's influences run deep into old school death metal, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Nile, Autopsy, but Lee also cites Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu as a touchstone, which gives you a sense of how wide the net goes. By the time they signed to Relapse Records in 2021, Ripped to Shreds had grown from a one man operation into a full four piece band. Their 2024 album 三屍 (Sanshi) digs into Taoist mythology, Chinese ghost marriage, and the concept of Diyu, the underworld in Chinese belief. In 2025 they put out their first live album, No Glory Here To Be Found, recorded at Bandcamp's Oakland studios, capturing the band at full force.
