Rob Kemps has built a reputation as a performer with a deep love for the chanson tradition, and few figures loom larger in that world for him than Jacques Brel. In his theatre show Laat me niet alleen, he traces the life and music of the Belgian singer songwriter he considers the greatest chansonnier of all time, weaving Brel's story together with his own. It follows his earlier programme Hemel op aarde, which was praised by Theaterkrant as infectiously enjoyable. The show takes its audience across the globe, following Brel's journey from his hometown of Schaarbeek through Paris, Berlin, Moscow and New York, all the way to Hiva Oa in the South Pacific where Brel spent his final days. Kemps brings equal measures of humour and genuine emotion to the material, making it personal rather than reverential.
