About
Also known as: Robert William Cray
Robert Cray's big breakthrough came with 1986's Strong Persuader, an album that won a Grammy and gave him the crossover hit "Smoking Gun". Before that, he'd built his name the hard way, playing college towns on the West Coast and winning over European crowds with albums like Bad Influence and False Accusations. He also turns up, uncredited on bass, in the house party band in National Lampoon's Animal House. He's played a lot of famous company over the years. He backed Chuck Berry in a film directed by Taylor Hackford at Keith Richards' invitation, recorded with John Lee Hooker, duetted with B.B. King, and shared the stage with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan at that last Vaughan show. Five Grammys, a spot in the Blues Hall of Fame and a long run of albums from Who's Been Talkin' in 1980 to That's What I Heard in 2020 sum up a steady, Fender powered career.
