Rockapella have been making voices do things most people assume require instruments since they formed in New York City in 1986. The group built their sound street corner by street corner, starting with doo wop and barbershop and eventually pushing toward a style rooted in R&B and contemporary pop, all without a single instrument in the mix. Their biggest mainstream moment came as the house band and comic relief act on the PBS geography game show Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, where their theme song became one of the most recognisable TV tunes of its era. That television run opened doors to a recording deal in Japan, where they landed a serious following and released seven albums, helping introduce contemporary a cappella to an entirely new audience. They have since put out 19 albums across the US and Japan and have shared stages with acts ranging from Billy Joel to Chuck Berry, and even performed alongside the Boston Pops.
