About

Roland Pöntinen is a Swedish pianist and composer whose career spans solo recitals, chamber music, and concerto performances across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He made his orchestral debut in 1981 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and has since shared the stage with conductors like Esa Pekka Salonen, Neeme Järvi and Franz Welser Möst. At the BBC Proms he has performed both the Grieg and György Ligeti piano concertos, which says a lot about his range. His solo recording debut came in 1984 on the BIS Records label with a programme of Russian piano music, and he has since clocked up more than 50 recordings as soloist, accompanist and orchestral collaborator. As a composer, Pöntinen moves confidently between classical and more contemporary idioms. His orchestral elegy Blue Winter for trombone and strings was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and drew praise for its icy, acid harmonies and lyrical trombone writing. Other works range from the tango flavoured Tango Plus for clarinet, violin, cello and piano to a full Concerto for piano and winds.
