Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón built his reputation on some of the most demanding stages in opera, singing Alfredo opposite Anna Netrebko at the Salzburg Festival and making his mark at the Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra Bastille, and La Monnaie. His voice sits squarely in the lyric tenor tradition, but he has never been content to stay in one lane: alongside heavyweight Verdi and Puccini roles, he has recorded Händel arias with the Gabrieli Players and film music on the album La Strada. His 2010 DG release México! is a real highlight, pairing him with the Bolívar Soloists for a chamber ensemble take on Mexican standards, from Bésame Mucho to Cucurrucucú Paloma, with arrangements by Gonzalo Grau and Efraín Oscher. Away from performing, Villazón has directed operas in Lyon, Vienna, and Baden Baden, presented arts television for Arte, and even published a novel.
