About
Dutch flutist Ronald Snijders has spent decades carving out a sound that blends Surinamese kaseko and kawina rhythms with jazz, funk, pop and world music. Born in Paramaribo, he built his reputation in Europe through his own band, appearances at the North Sea Jazz Festival and extensive touring across Africa, the Caribbean and North America. Early in his career he played with the Willem Breuker Kollektief, and he has also performed with the Metropole Orchestra. His musicological research at the University of Amsterdam, which he completed between 1986 and 1991, focused specifically on kaseko, the Surinamese genre that runs through much of his recorded work. Snijders has released well over twenty albums, ranging from the funk driven Funky Flute to the live Kaseko Mundial! and the more recent Nelson & Djosa Sessions. He has also produced children's music rooted in Surinamese tradition and written a biography of his father, composer Eddy Snijders. In 2022 he received the Boy Edgar Prize, one of the most significant jazz honours in the Netherlands.
