Roots Manuva has long been one of the most distinctive voices in British hip hop, blending dub and dancehall textures into a sound that never quite fits any tidy box. His 2001 album Run Come Save Me, released on Big Dada, is the record that really put him on the map. NME called it "Brit rap's finest hour to date", and Q ranked it among the best 50 albums of that year. Critics praised the way he moved between club jams and message tracks with equal ease, bringing what BBC Music described as a genuine "musical invention and individual approach to the genre". Coming out of Stockwell in South London, his style draws on hip hop but keeps dub and dancehall close, giving his music a weight and atmosphere that sets it apart from pretty much anything else in the UK scene.
