Gioachino Rossini is best known for comic operas like The Barber of Seville, but his range stretched well beyond theatrical wit. Around 1830 he stepped away from opera entirely, apparently content to leave composing behind. That retirement did not last long. A commission during a trip through Spain drew him back to work, and the result was the Stabat Mater, a piece that took until 1841 to reach its final form. It fuses the emotional weight of sacred music with the sweeping dramatic flair of opera, and the combination proved immediately compelling despite fierce opposition from a young Wagner. The premiere was a triumph anyway.
