About
Also known as: Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the Netherlands' leading orchestras, rooted in the city of Rotterdam and known for programming that spans core classical repertoire and ambitious contemporary work. Under the baton of Andrew Manze, the ensemble has tackled Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with pointed intent, pairing the iconic fate motif with new pieces by composers such as Joey Roukens and Jonathan Dove's Hojoki. The orchestra also takes on large scale premieres, including the Dutch premiere of Samy Moussa's orchestral work Nocturne, a psychologically charged piece that sits far from conventional impressionist atmospheres, anchored deep in the low registers. Collaborations with cutting edge composers extend further: the ensemble has performed Julia Wolfe's oratorio Fire in my mouth, a monumental choral and orchestral work that weaves archival texts, folk songs and protest music into a memorial for the 146 victims of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.
