About
Also known as: Montgomery, Roy
Roy Montgomery has spent more than four decades building a sound that critics tend to call cinematic: mostly instrumental guitar pieces made of chiming, echoing and droning layers that sit somewhere between post rock, lo fi, folk and avant garde experiment. One reviewer, Brett Abrahamsen, went as far as saying that in a just world books would be written about his greatness. He started out in the Pin Group, whose 1981 single Ambivalence was the very first release on Flying Nun Records, and later played in Dadamah, Dissolve and Hash Jar Tempo. His solo records, on labels like Drunken Fish and Kranky, began with Scenes from the South Island in 1995, an album about distance from home and empty, wide open landscapes. Since then he has kept a steady output, with a run of releases on Grapefruit and, more recently, Discreet Music. He also collaborates widely, with names like Flying Saucer Attack, Grouper and Mary Lattimore. Away from music, he heads the environmental management department at Lincoln University.
