About
Hamburg's Running Wild built their reputation on one of metal's most distinctive obsessions: pirates. After two albums with Satanic themes, the band pivoted hard in 1987 with Under Jolly Roger, a record that didn't just adopt a pirate aesthetic but effectively invented what would later be called pirate metal. Frontman and sole constant member Rolf Kasparek took the historical research seriously, and albums like Port Royal, Death or Glory and Blazon Stone dug into the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo and the Conquistadors with genuine depth. Running Wild are considered part of the German heavy metal "big four" alongside Grave Digger, Helloween and Rage, and across 17 studio albums they built a back catalogue that holds up. The band split in 2009, went out with a massive show at Wacken Open Air, and then reunited in 2012 as if the goodbye never happened. Their most recent studio album is Blood on Blood.
