Sad Lovers and Giants have been quietly essential to the post punk and new wave underground since forming in Watford in 1980, blending atmospheric keyboards, psychedelia and a distinctly brooding guitar sound. Their debut album Epic Garden Music hit the UK Independent Albums Chart in 1982, and singles like 'Man of Straw' made genuine dents in the indie charts. A John Peel Session and a live radio concert for Radio Netherlands Worldwide cemented their reputation early on. The band built a devoted following across Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, Spain and France, and kept returning to the stage in various configurations over the decades. Notably, guitarist Tony McGuinness went on to co found the trance act Above and Beyond. Sad Lovers and Giants released their seventh studio album Mission Creep in 2018, their first in sixteen years, proving they never quite went away. A five disc Cherry Red box set in 2017 made sure the full arc of their career was documented properly.
