About
Also known as: Salif Keifa, Salif Keit
Few voices in African music carry the weight and history of Salif Keita's. Born into the royal Keita family of Mali and rejected by them for his albinism, he turned that painful contradiction into a career that would earn him the nickname the Golden Voice of Africa. His music weaves together traditional West African styles with influences from Europe and the Americas, built on a bed of balafons, koras, djembes, guitars, and synthesizers. His 1987 album Soro was the international breakthrough, and after years of success in Europe, a return to Bamako produced what many consider his finest work: 2002's Moffou. His 2009 album La Différence, recorded across Bamako, Beirut, Paris, and Los Angeles, tackled the persecution of albino communities worldwide and won him the Best World Music prize at the Victoires de la musique in 2010. He performed alongside Carlos Santana, Joe Zawinul, and Wayne Shorter over the years, and his 2018 release Un Autre Blanc was announced as his farewell to recording.
