About
Also known as: Samara Joy McLendon
Samara Joy went from winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019 to collecting six Grammy Awards, and that's before most people had worked out how to say her name. Bassist Christian McBride, one of the judges that night, called her a "once in a generation talent." She cut her self titled debut while still in college, and JazzTimes named her Best New Artist in 2021. Her 2022 follow up, Linger Awhile, hit number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and won her Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 2023 Grammys. More wins followed, including Best Jazz Performance for "Tight" and for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me." Viral videos helped build her audience, and her style leans on Billie Holiday for the glamour and on Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan for the voice. Portrait arrived in 2024.
