About

Scott Colley is one of the most in demand double bassists in jazz, a Los Angeles native who has spent decades at the centre of the music's most vital conversations. His name turns up everywhere: touring with Herbie Hancock's working trio for five years in the early 2000s, holding down the low end for Jim Hall right up until Hall's death in 2013, and appearing on Grammy nominated records like Guided Tour and Still Dreaming with Joshua Redman. The list of collaborators reads like a who's who of post bop, from Pat Metheny and Chris Potter to Brian Blade and Julian Lage. As a bandleader, Colley writes nearly everything himself, and his albums have a consistently rich, unhurried quality. Architect of the Silent Moment from 2007 gathered Ralph Alessi, Craig Taborn, and Brian Blade into a quartet that toured before the record was even finished. Empire followed in 2010 with Bill Frisell added to that core group. Beyond recording, he has long been a fixture at teaching residencies, from the Banff Centre to Berklee, bringing the same seriousness to education that he brings to the bandstand.
