About
Sedna Heitzman is a violist whose programming choices reveal a strong dramatic instinct. Her concert programme titled De Laatste Akte centres on two heavyweight works for viola and piano: a selection from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet suite, arranged for the intimate combination of viola and piano, and Shostakovich's Viola Sonata op. 147. In her hands, the Prokofiev draws out the storytelling quality of the viola, letting the instrument trace the arc of Shakespeare's tragedy through the ballet's famous dances and lyrical passages. The Shostakovich closes the evening on a deeply personal note. Written in 1975 shortly before the composer's death, the sonata is widely regarded as his musical farewell, full of introspection and quiet melancholy.
