Few conductors have a backstory quite like Semyon Bychkov's. After winning the Rachmaninov Conducting Competition in 1973, Soviet authorities blocked him from claiming his prize of conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic, and he eventually made his way to the United States with next to nothing. That scrappy path led somewhere remarkable: a ten year recording contract with Philips Classics, a debut recording with the Berlin Philharmonic, and a career that took him through the Orchestre de Paris, Dresden's Semperoper, and a long tenure with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. His Cologne recordings cover a serious range, from Brahms and Mahler to Shostakovich and Wagner's Lohengrin, which won BBC Music Magazine's Record of the Year in 2010. Since taking over as chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic for the 2018 to 2019 season, Bychkov has become one of the most prominent figures in European orchestral life. He also holds the Günter Wand Conducting Chair with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Otto Klemperer Chair at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The International Opera Awards named him Conductor of the Year in 2015.
