Named after the Portuguese word for "grave", Sepultura spent the late 1980s and early 1990s helping define what thrash metal, groove metal and death metal sounded like on a global scale. Formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the band broke through internationally with Beneath the Remains in 1989, then built an unstoppable run through Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots that saw them sell close to 20 million records worldwide and collect gold and platinum certifications across multiple continents. The classic lineup of Max Cavalera, Igor Cavalera, guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Jr. held together for nearly a decade before Max departed in 1997 and Igor followed in 2006. Derrick Green stepped in as frontman and the band kept pushing, incorporating alternative metal, world music and progressive textures into a sound that kept evolving well past their thrash origins. Their fifteenth studio album, Kairos, got a full stream treatment in 2024, and the band has been on a farewell tour since March of that year, wrapping up more than four decades of activity.
