Serge Lama's calling card is "Je suis malade", a song he wrote with Alice Dona that became a standard of French popular music, recorded by Dalida and later given one of its most memorable readings by Lara Fabian. Born in Bordeaux and recording under his stage name rather than his real name Serge Chauvier, Lama has been a fixture of chanson française since the mid 1960s, building a catalogue that runs to well over two dozen studio albums. His reach goes beyond his own recordings: he has written songs for artists including Mireille Mathieu, Gilbert Bécaud and Melina Mercouri. Hits like "Mourir en France" and "Femme, femme, femme" kept him a chart presence through the late 1970s and beyond, and he has also brought his material to the theatre stage in Paris. His albums continue to find an audience, with the most recent studio work appearing on "Où sont passés nos rêves" in 2016.
