About
Also known as: Fatma Sezen Yıldırım, Minik Serçe, Σεζέν Ακτσού
With over 40 million albums sold worldwide and a nickname like "Queen of Turkish Pop", Sezen Aksu is hard to argue with. Born Fatma Sezen Yıldırım in Denizli, she has been reshaping Turkish pop since her debut in 1975, blending heavily orchestrated drama with sweeter, more intimate songwriting. NPR recognised her in 2010 as one of the 50 Great Voices of the world, and her sound has reached well beyond Turkey into the Balkans, Greece and Europe at large. As much a kingmaker as a performer, Aksu has written and produced hits for artists including Tarkan, whose smash "Şımarık" came from her pen, and she guided careers like those of Sertab Erener and Aşkın Nur Yengi. Her 1997 collaboration with Goran Bregović on Düğün ve Cenaze broadened her international reach even further. She also published a songbook, Eksik Şiir, collecting 197 of her songs, which sold 17,000 copies in its first four days.
