Shadia Mansour is often called the First Lady of Arabic Hip Hop, and she earned the title by rapping in both Arabic and English about Middle Eastern politics while dressed in a traditional Palestinian thobe. Her first single, Al Kufiya Arabiya, featured M 1 of dead prez and was built around the kufiya as a symbol of Arab identity. She has described her work as part of a musical intifada against occupation, conservatism and the oppression of women. She started rapping in 2003 and has since built a reputation across the Middle East, Europe and the US. Collaborators include Johnny Juice Rosado, Lowkey, Narcy, the Palestinian group DAM, Ana Tijoux on Somos Sur, and 47Soul and Fedzilla on Border Ctrl. Her early tracks took a hardcore stance, but over time her lyrics have grown more nuanced and, in her words, more realistic. She also pushes back on how women are treated in hip hop and in Palestinian society, and has refused to perform for gender separated audiences.
