About
Shannon Lay has a pretty great trick up her sleeve: she plays in the punk and garage scene, then goes home and makes some of the most hushed, delicate folk around. Before her solo career took over, she was lead guitarist in Facts on File and later in Feels, who put out two albums with her, and she still plays in Ty Segall's backing group, the Freedom Band. Segall also co produced her 2019 Sub Pop debut August. Her records tend to get compared to Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan and Joni Mitchell, and critics keep coming back to how intimate they feel, like she's in the room with you. It started with home recorded demos on Bandcamp, then moved through Living Water, August and 2021's Geist, which includes a cover of Syd Barrett's Late Night and a song inspired by Dune. In 2023 she put out Covers Vol. 1, a handy look at what she listens to, with songs by Arthur Russell, The Velvet Underground and others.
