About
Shawn James is a Chicago born singer, songwriter, and guitarist who deals in southern gothic, a sound that pulls from blues, folk, and gospel with an unmistakably raw, weathered feel. He records and releases music independently through his own label, Shawn James Music, and performs both solo and with his backing band The Shapeshifters, with whom he has put out five albums alongside his seven solo records. His song 'Through the Valley', originally from his 2012 debut Shadows, became a genuine phenomenon when Ashley Johnson's cover of it was used in the reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II in 2016. The track shot to the top of Spotify's viral chart in the UK and racked up over 60 million streams across platforms. Beyond the gaming world, his music has turned up on Shameless, Yukon Men, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, and a 2015 video of him performing in a wolf sanctuary went viral after landing on Reddit. Quite the career arc for someone who started out busking in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
