Winning the BBC Young Musician award in 2016 made Sheku Kanneh Mason a name to know in classical music, and he was the first Black musician to take that title since the competition began in 1978. The Nottingham cellist plays on a Matteo Goffriller instrument made in 1700, and his debut album Inspiration shot to number one on the UK classical chart and racked up 2.5 million Spotify streams within weeks of release. His second album Elgar pushed things even further, making him the first cellist ever to crack the UK top ten, and the first classical musician to do so in over thirty years. Kanneh Mason performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, which introduced him to a massive global audience. He has twice played at the BAFTA ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, becoming the first artist ever invited back for a second performance there. A committed member of the Chineke! Orchestra, which champions Black and minority ethnic classical musicians, he was also appointed as the Royal Academy of Music's first Menuhin Visiting Professor of Performance Mentoring in 2022.
