Shu'al

About

Shu'al is a five piece klezmer band that moves between the deep melancholy of the tradition and its cathartic, party starting joy. They play both traditional and contemporary klezmer pieces, and they like to wander off into other corners of folk music along the way. Their sound is their own, but it comes with real respect for a tradition that spent centuries absorbing influences from other cultures. Tight timing, driving rhythms and an obvious love of playing make their music hard to sit still to. They have also recorded Di Grine Kuzine, a song from 1921 about newcomers who sailed to the United States full of hope, only to run into economic hardship and brutal working conditions. It became a classic, and Shu'al gives it a contemporary reading.
