About
Also known as: シギスヴァルト・クイケン
Sigiswald Kuijken is one of those musicians who genuinely changed how we listen to old music. The Belgian violinist, violist, and conductor built his reputation on period instruments and historically informed performance, famously resting the violin on the shoulder without a chin rest, reviving a technique largely forgotten in modern playing. He founded the ensemble La Petite Bande in 1972 and has taught Baroque violin at the Royal Conservatories of both The Hague and Brussels since 1971. One of his most ambitious projects is a 19 part CD series of Bach cantatas for Accent Records, recorded between 2004 and 2012, in which he applies a strict one voice per part approach rather than using a full choir. It's a bold interpretive stance, warmly received overall even if critics noted it suits some cantatas better than others. He also performs as a conductor of Romantic era symphonies, and is a founding member of the Kuijken String Quartet.
