About
Sílvia Pérez Cruz has won two Goya Awards for best original song, which is a pretty striking record for someone who started out in a flamenco group. She co founded Las Migas while studying at the Catalonia College of Music in Barcelona, where she trained in classical piano and saxophone and took a degree in vocal jazz. Her solo debut, 11 de Novembre, came in 2012 and was made with guitarist and producer Raül Fernández Miró. It blends fado, jazz improvisation and flamenco, and it was nominated for album of the year in both Spain and France. She followed it with Granada in 2014, a record sung across several languages, including French, German, English and four Iberian languages. It takes in a Catalan folk song made famous by Pablo Casals and a Spanish Civil War anthem. For Cruz, a song has to carry a story, and that shapes everything she sings. In 2022 she received Spain's national prize for contemporary music, and her 2023 album Toda la vida, un día was recorded in cities across Europe, Latin America and Cuba. In 2024 she played an NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
