About
Simon Dobson is an English composer whose career spans brass band writing, electronic influenced orchestral work, and film scores, with a particular talent for blending genres that rarely meet. His piece Penlee, inspired by the Penlee lifeboat disaster, reached number 106 in the Classic FM Hall of Fame and has been used as a test piece in competitions from Switzerland to North America. Works like The Drop, built around drum and bass DJ techniques, and Sinewave, rooted in electronic music concepts, show how comfortably he pushes brass band writing into unexpected territory. Beyond composing, Dobson keeps busy as a conductor, session musician and founding member of The Badcore Horns, a session horns collective that has recorded with acts including Madness and Electric Swing Circus. He won a British Composer of the Year Award in 2012 for A Symphony of Colours, and has composed live orchestral scores for silent film, including a WWI epic commissioned by the British Film Institute. His music is published by Faber in London.
