About

Also known as: Simon Trpchesk, Simon Trpčeski

Simon Trpčeski has a knack for making audiences forget he grew up playing in a country most classical music fans couldn't place on a map. The Macedonian pianist burst onto the international scene in 2001 with a debut recital at London's Wigmore Hall and a spot on the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, and things moved fast from there. His debut disc on EMI Classics, a solo recital mixing Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky and Prokofiev, picked up both the Editor's Choice and Debut Album awards from Gramophone magazine. He followed it with single composer recitals devoted to Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Debussy. Trpčeski has since performed with some of the biggest orchestras around, from the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic to the London Symphony and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, with whom he recorded all the Rachmaninov Piano Concertos. That Rachmaninov recording took the Diapason d'Or de l'Année in 2010. Critics single out the warmth and emotional directness in his playing, not just the technical firepower. He also holds the distinction of being the first artist ever awarded the National Artist of Macedonia title.
