About
Sinta Wullur has built a career around one of the more genuinely distinctive creative projects in contemporary composition: blending Javanese gamelan traditions with Western classical forms. The Indonesian Dutch musician plays piano, sings, and composes, but her real signature is the chromatically tuned gamelan instruments she uses to bridge those two musical worlds. She founded several gamelan groups in the Netherlands, including Tirta and Irama, and has sung with the ensemble Widosari since 1992. Her own ensemble, Multifoon, is where a lot of her most adventurous work lives. Her compositions range from chamber pieces like Khayal, which draws on both gamelan and Indian classical structures, to full operatic works. Sita's Liberation is probably her most ambitious: a gamelan opera combining singers, narrator, dancers, wayang kulit shadow puppetry, a string quartet, bass clarinet, and full chorus. Her CD Gong and Strings is among her released recordings.
