About
Madeline Elizabeth Johnston operates under several monikers, and Sister Grotto is one of them. Under that name, she put out three releases in 2016: You Don't Have to Be a House to Be Haunted, Blindside, and Song For An Unborn Sun, the last one a collaboration with Devin Shaffer under the name Yarrow. Johnston calls her music "heaven metal", a tag that fits the hazy, heavy atmosphere she builds as a singer, multi instrumentalist and audio engineer. Most of her output has come under the Midwife name, where she has built a devoted following across albums like Forever, Luminol, and No Depression in Heaven. That last record earned real critical traction, with a track called "Killdozer" landing on year end lists at both Consequence and Stereogum. She also works collaboratively, teaming up with Vyva Melinkolya on the joint LP Orbweaving and more recently with Matt Jencik on Never Die.
